Peter Parker is accepted into Horizon High – a high school for brilliant young scientific minds. He struggles with the duality of his social life at school and hiding his secret identity of Spider-Man from everyone including his best friend, Harry Osborn, who attends the competing Osborn Academy for Geniuses. During the It Chose You main story mission, Peter will venture into the sewers of New York. As he does so, a sneaky reference to the development team, Insomniac, is hidden. As Peter lifts the sewer grate, you’ll see “Insomniac Games” inscribed into the metalwork. Much like the previous Insomniac Spider-Man titles, the city of New York in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is filled to the brim with references and easter eggs that link out to the wider Marvel universe, amongst other fun nods and winks.

It’s the best-written story in the series yet (if still a bit cheesy at times), with performances worthy of the script. It’s a real triumph that it manages to cover such a wide spectrum of themes without suffering from tonal thwip-lash. A particularly memorable mission under the dancing lights of Coney Island’s amusement rides is a highlight that manages to impressively capture the story’s essence and bottle up its emotional tension before emphatically smashing it. The story swings just as elegantly between upbeat hijinks and solemn moments of reflection. The same can be said for both its heroes and villains, as Spider-Man 2 tackles the reasoning behind each character’s actions and the good that can hide in the shadows of evil. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has launched, with fans once again taking control of the web-slinging hero as he battles his way through villains and daily life, too.
